Three Common Shelving Units for Warehouses
May 31, 2013
For warehouses, it is important to utilize space efficiently while also ensuring security of the structure. There are many types of shelves and racking systems used in order to hold products, often products that are large and very heavy, in a systematic and safe way. Industrial shelving is engineered to be sturdy, and hold a lot of weight. What are some of the most common shelving types?
Mezzanine shelving is one popular option. Mezzanines allow companies to open up floor space, or maximize on storage space. It can be made of a number of different materials including cat iron or wood, and it is quite distinct in appearance. It basically looks like a small building of shelves, which go from floor to ceilings. Often, it is possible to walk along the top. They can help to create an in between floor for extra storage in high ceilinged buildings. These shelves can, when placed only above the head, double usable space without adding to the overhead.
Cantilever racks are another option for warehouse storage. Usually these are made from structural steel that has been roll formed. The rack is comprised of a verticle column, base, arms, and cross or horizontal basing. The bracing of the cantilever rack is used to connect columns. Cantilever racks are frequently found in places such as lumber yards and plumbing supply warehouses.
Teardrop pallet racking is a system design to use pallets to store materials. Pallets are also known as skids, and they are flat transporting supports that are used in conjunction with forklifts, front loaders, et cetera. Most pallets are wooden, though some are made from plastic, paper or metal. Roll formed racks are usually manufactured in the teardrop shape, earning it the name teardrop pallet racking. Teardrop pallet racking has holes on the upright column that are teardrop shaped. Mounting clips are used to rest the pallets, and since the clips can be easily moved to different heights, the teardrop pallet racking shelves are good for warehouses that have a large variety of product sizes. This is interesting. I have walked around the warehouse at my dads place before, but never realized there were so many storing methods!
